Lord of the Rings theory: Frodo does not know the name of Legolas
A new theory from Lord of the Rings fans suggests that although he is a key ally in the fight against Sauron, Frodo does not know the name Legolas.
JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is one of those works that never goes out of style, even though film adaptations of beloved fantasy novels came out over two decades ago. But the characters and vast lore of Middle-earth keep fans engaged far beyond the movies. There is so much detail to the story of Middle-earth, and looking at the original books, there is a lot of what is left unsaid in the adaptations, which leaves a lot to discover for those who have only seen the blockbuster movies.
That’s why the internet is full of new fan theories, findings, and questions about the the Lord of the Rings the universe to date. In fact, a fan theory posted on Reddit by user applecub arouses interest because it seems quite controversial. The user theorizes that Frodo does not even know the name of Legolas, although they met at The Fellowship of the Ring.
When the Fellowship was formed in Rivendell, Legolas was fairly calm, which is normal for his introverted character. Although Frodo may have been introduced to Legolas, the content of this fateful meeting would naturally trump any other information. The most important member of the Fellowship, besides Frodo, would have been Aragorn, or, as the Hobbit knew him at the time, Grand Pas. Aragorn had helped Frodo survive the Ringwraith attack and had led him and his companions almost to Rivendell. However, Legolas was a new person in Frodo’s life.
It also doesn’t help that after the skirmish in Amon Hen, on Boromir’s death, Frodo and Sam parted ways with the rest of the community so they could travel to Mordor. This means that Frodo really didn’t spend a lot of time with Legolas in the first place. So when Reddit’s theory is about the Fellowship reunion near the end of The king’s return, it is clear that Frodo does not say the name of Legolas. When Gimli walks through the door, Frodo says his name with joy. Frodo smiles as Legalos follows him, but his mouth remains slightly open – almost as if he had forgotten the Elf’s name.
After months of separation from the Fellowship and the trauma he suffered on his journey to Mordor, it would make sense for Frodo to forget the name Legolas. Their introduction was brief and overwhelmed by the daunting task at hand, so while Frodo may have already known his name, it is possible that it escaped him by saving all of Middle-earth. Additionally, during their reunion in Rivendell, it would be incredibly embarrassing for Frodo to ask his name, which fan theory suggests.
Whether Frodo actually knew Legolas’s name is up for debate, as fans don’t actually hear Frodo say his name multiple times in the film trilogy. But this fan theory clearly holds water, it’s entirely possible that even though Frodo did knowing his name, he completely forgot it, without it being his fault. Frodo was charged with an important objective, so insignificant information like the name of an elf could have easily escaped him.
