my place | Sunbury and Macedonian ranges
ADT McLellan is an author and musician based in the Macedon Ranges. The third installment in her young adult fiction series Horn-Horn will be available for purchase online in November. He spoke to journalist Oliver Lees.
How do you relate to Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges?
I have lived in Mount Macedon and Gisborne since I was two, having moved here from London. I went to Macedon Elementary School and Mowbray College, and attended Victoria University in Sunbury in the early 2000s. I am a proud Macedonian from the Mount and think we live in the best place in the world (tied with London).
When did you decide to become an author?
I started writing when I was 11 and gradually matured in my skills over the years. Particularly in my early twenties, when I couldn’t find good books to read, I really started to rely on my own stories as compensation. That’s when I realized I wanted to do this for a living.
Have you always intended to write young adult fantasy?
No, actually I’m not a fan of fantasy in general. I don’t like Lord of the Rings or Dune or anything like that. The stories must strictly be contemporary fantasy (set in the real world) otherwise I feel like I can’t relate to them. For this reason, Horn-Horn is more of a comedy than a fantasy – the fantasy elements play a secondary role to the quirky small town characters going about their daily lives.
Your Horn-Horn series is a real jumble of genres. How would you describe these books to a beginning reader?
I tend to describe the books as Beetlejuice Meets The Simpsons Meets Harry Potter. It’s packed with pop culture references, filled with scientific jargon, inside jokes, slapstick comedy, sheer Stephen King horror, plenty of crazy twists and a million clues in every book so that you solve the many puzzles presented.
It is aimed at young adults from the age of 13, although there are a lot of fans in their 20s, 30s, 40s, etc. a good laugh and a story that appeals to them.
When can we expect more from the Horn-Horn series?
There are currently two books available in the series: ‘Horn-Horn’ and its sequel ‘Horn-Horn, Cracked’. The third book ‘Stars Above Horn-Horn’ will be available only on Amazon from November 30, 2021. The fourth book in the series, currently titled ‘Horn-Horn’s Cow Problem’, will hopefully be released in 2022 or 2023.
