The two new books by Anees Salim to be published
The two new titles, The Odd Book of Baby Names and The Bellboy, will be released in 2021 and 2022 respectively, the publisher said in a statement.
Penguin Random House India announced on Friday the acquisition of two new titles from award-winning contemporary writer Anees Salim.
The two new titles, The strange book of baby names and The bellhop, will be released under the Penguin’s “Hamish Hamilton” imprint in 2021 and 2022, respectively, the publishing house said in a statement.
While The strange book of baby names is a historical fiction retracing the last days of one of the last kings of India who is said to have fathered more than 100 children, The bellhop is the story of a 17 year old boy from an island that is slowly disappearing from the face of the earth.
“These two books are totally different in terms of craftsmanship and characterization. While The strange book of baby names has a historical background and is narrated by several voices, The bellhop takes place in contemporary India and tells the story of a boy who gets lost in the world. As in my previous works, I find myself somewhat in these two books, ”said the author.
Salim’s published works include Bagh Vanity (winner of the Hindu Literary Prize for Best Fiction 2013), Descendants of the Blind Lady (winner of the Raymond Crossword Book Award for best fiction 2014 and the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award 2018) and The sea of small towns (winner of the Atta Galatta-Banaglore Literature Festival Book Prize for Best Fiction 2017).
“Anees Salim is one of the best living writers we have in English. His wry sense of humor and razor-sharp wit belies his eerie understanding of human frailty. He is the master of tragicomedy and I can’t wait to share his two new books with the world, ”said Manasi Subramaniam, Editor-in-Chief of Penguin Random House India.
