Will there be another Percy Jackson book? 2021 updates and everything we know so far
Will there be another Percy Jackson delivered? It might seem like a strange question to ask ten years after the end of the main series, but the sequel Apollo’s essays concluded relatively recently, and with so many shows getting sequels, prequels, or even spinoffs lately, one can only wonder about Rick Riordan’s beloved pentalogy. So, can we expect any updates in 2021 or later?
In the unlikely event that you haven’t encountered the books growing up, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a YA Fantasy series released in 2005. It follows Percy Jackson, 12, a boy who discovers he is a demigod, son of Poseidon. At Half-Blood Camp, he learns about his heritage and the dangers he might face and makes friends.
Following the first book The Lightning Thief, four more follow-ups as part of the main series:
Sea of monsters (2006)
The curse of the titan (2007)
The battle of the labyrinth (2008)
The last Olympian (2009)
Riordan has also published accompanying books and several short stories and anthologies. Two films that adapt the first two books have also been created. These, however, have not been as well received as the books, while the author’s complicated feelings about them have become well known. The film series was eventually discontinued.
The Chronicles of the half-blood camp, as the franchise is otherwise known – has been praised for its strong characterization, good pacing, and positive – but not flawless – portrayal of characters with learning disabilities. The books are all rated with over 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads, with The last Olympian enjoying an almost perfect 4.5 / 5.
The trials of Apollo, Another Riordan pentalogy that features several of the characters from the main series has also seen great popularity and has been well received by fans. The books came out between 2016 and 2020 – when the last book came out.
So can we expect another Percy Jackson book soon? According to author Rick Riordan, we can’t, at least not on an epic scale. In a 2020 interview, the author spoke about the bittersweet feeling of writing what he considers “the last book in the last series.” While he remains open to the possibility of a few short or standalone stories at some point, Riordan believes he used all the myths he could to find inspiration, and another great adventure seems highly unlikely, as he’s content with where the show and its characters are.

The author also commented on the choice of having a now adult Percy to go to college without going into too much detail about his character’s future. “I don’t want to seal everyone’s fate forever; I’m a big non-believer in epilogues, and I want to leave some room for readers to imagine what will happen next, ”he said succinctly.
It is an excellent admission to make for an author, and which other authors have not been so good. As important as it is to make sure a story reaches its full potential, it’s just as important to know when it’s time to wrap up and say goodbye to the characters.
Meanwhile, Riordan recently wrote Daughter of the depths, a new adventure inspired by Twenty thousand leagues under sea.
